Cure Deep Winter Blues With Concert

Steve McGaha, Hunter Holmes and Rocky Bottom Bluegrass to perform February 16 at Hagood Mill

Come join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as “Music in the Mountains 2013” continues with the Hagood Mill hosting a special “Deep Winter Blues” concert  on Saturday, February 16. Starting at 12:00 and continuing until 3:00 in the Visitor Building, will be some great folk blues music with SC Folk Heritage Award winning guitarist, Steve McGaha and Laurens musician, Hunter Holmes. Steve and Hunter both reach “way back” and play a variety of piedmont blues and old time medicine show tunes. Seating is limited and first come - first served. Mill regulars, Rocky Bottom Bluegrass, will also be jamming at the site. The old gristmill and other demonstrations will be running from 10:00 until 4:00.

The old water-powered 1845 gristmill is one of the finest examples of nineteenth century technology in the Upstate and operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half…the mill will be running throughout the day. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items. The mill site’s 1890 cotton gin is one of the nicest specimens around and should be running a time or two through the day.

The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, basket-making, pottery, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, metal-smithing, leather-working, bee keeping and more! The mill site this month welcomes new “cooking assistant,” Gracie Dellinger.
