The jackpot had already broken the record Thursday for the largest lottery prize in history at $540 million.

The new estimate, which was $100 million higher than Thursday’s, was announced Friday morning after officials from participating states spoke with each other and assessed the volume of ticket sales.

Long lines filled many stores where Mega Millions tickets were sold. Most people in those lines were waiting to buy multiple tickets, according to several media reports.
