New Easley Charter School Proposed

Middle school is one of 19 new charter schools proposed statewide.

A group of Easley parents and teachers have applied to the state to start a new charter school serving middle-schoolers, according to an announcement from the SC Department of Education.

The new school would set its sights on improving the graduation rate, catching students up academically and educating them about careers, nutrition and fitness, according to a Greenville News report.

The new school, which would be named Intense Charter School, would serve grades 5-7 and eventually grades 5-8, planning committee chairwoman Betty Roe told the paper.

“It is for students who have average to above average intelligence but for whatever reason they have fallen behind in school,” said Roe, a teacher at Gettys Middle School.

The proposed school must pass muster with the state's Charter School Advisory Committee to ensure compliance with state and federal laws. If approved, the South Carolina Public Charter School District would have 45 days to grant final approval.

If successful, the school could open in the fall of 2014 after a year of planning, Roe told the paper.
