Obituary: Margaret McLeod Sowell of Easley

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday in her home state of Alabama.

Margaret McLeod Sowell, a resident of Foothills Presbyterian Retirement Community in Easley, SC and formerly of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband James Talbot Sowell. 

Born in Camden, Alabama on February 28, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Judge J.M. (Mac) McLeod and Lucia Moore McLeod. She came to Montgomery in 1941 where she was employed by the Veterans Hospital Administration until her retirement. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church for 50 years and was a long-time volunteer with American Red Cross at Jackson Hospital. 

She is survived by her three daughters: Nancy Williams of Greenville, S.C., Betty Haring (husband John) of Pawleys Island, S.C, and Dara Sowell of New York City; three grandchildren: Margaret Meredith Walsh (husband Hayes) of Spartanburg, S.C., James Edmund Williams (wife Alison) of Greenville, S.C. and Haydn Christina Haring of Charleston, S.C.; two great-granddaughters: Sarah Gordon Walsh and Margaret McLeod (Maggie) Walsh; one sister: Bess Weissinger of Birmingham, Ala. and many loving nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11 from 5 pm to 7 pm at Leak-Memory Chapel in Montgomery. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 5 Arden Road, Montgomery, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to a charity of choice.
