Ocean Adventurer to Speak at Clemson University
Writer and filmmaker Jon Bowermaster to speak at Strom Thurmond Institute Oct. 9

If it’s a quest for adventure you seek, mark Oct. 9 on your calendar. The Clemson University Calhoun Lecture Series will present Jon Bowermaster, writer, filmmaker and worldwide adventurer.
Bowermaster’s program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Self Auditorium of the Strom Thurmond Institute on campus. The public is invited to an evening of words and images that bring the sea to life and speak to the perils and challenges in the relationship between humankind and the oceans. There is no charge for the presentation.Â
Bowermaster for the last 20 years has been using the media — books, films, magazine stories and now the Internet — to bring the world along as he explores the remote corners of the planet. The goal of each of his expeditions is both adventure and education through exploration of local cultures, histories, environmental issues and the future of these varied regions and the world.

A six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council and award-winning writer and filmmaker, Bowermaster recently concluded OCEANS 8, a project that took him and his teams around the world by sea kayak during the past 10 years. The expeditions ranged from the Aleutian Islands to Vietnam, French Polynesia to Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Gabon to Croatia and Tasmania to Antarctica.
Seeing the world from the seat of a sea kayak has given Bowermaster a one-of-a-kind look at both the health of the oceans and the lives of the nearly three billion people around the globe who depend on them.
