Pickens County Meals on Wheels Celebrates Volunteers

Annual luncheon recognizes Meals on Wheels Volunteers for the contributions they make to the program all year long.

On Tuesday, November 6, nearly 200 volunteers gathered at the Rock Springs Baptist Church Gymnasium for the Pickens County Meals on Wheels Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. The event was made possible through the generous support of Health Services Group; Rock Springs Baptist Church; Moe Collins, owner of Easley, Pickens and Powdersville McDonalds; Lee Jolly, manager of Easley Wal-Mart and Ray Coleman, owner of Easley Waffle House.

Back by popular demand was guest entertainer and Meals on Wheels volunteer, Mr. Browning Bryant. His uplifting performance was food for the soul.

The Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon is an annual event held during the first week of November. It is designed to celebrate and recognize Meals on Wheels Volunteers for the contributions they make to the program all year long. “I always look forward to the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Seeing everyone gathered together is a vivid reminder of how many volunteers it takes to keep our wheels rolling as well as the impact they make in Pickens County,” said Meta Bowers, Executive Director.

Meals on Wheels volunteers do make a profound difference each day as they deliver nutritious meals and provide a safety-check to the 240 homebound elderly and disabled residents served through the program. “Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal,” says Bowers. “Our caring volunteers provide quality of life to a fragile population that would otherwise struggle to maintain their nutritional health and independence.”

Volunteers are the foundation of the Meals on Wheels program, and according to Bowers, volunteers are always needed on a regular and substitute basis. This year volunteers have already delivered 46, 999 meals; donated over 10,032 hours of service and driven over 73,094 miles.
