Reader Asks Councilman to Please, Return Lucy
In a letter, Debbie Griffen Brown writes about her own personal experience with a dog that had strayed from home.

Dear Easley City Councilman Dave Watson,
Please be kind hearted enough to return Lucy to the Blanton’s. I know your family became attached to Lucy, but can you not feel the pain the Blanton’s are going through by losing a family member that they’ve had a lot longer?Â
Let me tell you a story that happened at my home a couple of years ago. A beautiful Springer Spaniel found its way to our house after walking thought our neighborhood. Not sure why he picked us, but he did. We have a dog and a cat who typically don’t like other animals. Even our (at the time) 9 year old kitty took to this dog and after having it around for several days we were going to keep it if we couldn’t find the owners.

While the dog was dirty we could tell that it was a purebred and had at once been well taken care of. I immediately gave the doggie a bath with no fuss from it and took it picture. Created a flyer and printed out 100 in color (at my expense). The ran around a one-mile radius of our home posting that flyer everywhere that I could legally. Dropped it off to stores that were a little bit further away and they promptly put it on their store doors. And I even put it in the local newspaper, on my Facebook page and friends shared it on theirs, as well as contacted SPCA and every animal organizations in the Greenville area. Took him to the vet for a checkup and shots just to be on the safe side.
Finally, I found a lost dog ad in the Greenville news that sure sounded like the one we had found. The owner was a little ole man who was mourning the loss of his beloved friend. The wife drove him here and he instantly dropped to his knees and said with tears in his eyes, “Jake, I don’t know where you’ve been and I wish you could tell me about you’re adventure, but I sure am glad this nice lady found you."

You see Councilman Watson, many many people had seen this dog over a five-week period of time that it had been missing, but I saw a dog that needed some help and I didn’t ignore it to let it continue walking. He was lost.
This wife explained to me that the dog had been missing for over five weeks. Her husband couldn’t sleep at night without his faithful companion by his side and he was getting sicker. The grandchildren that lived nearby were still crying.Â
You see, we knew Jake was slightly depressed by the way he was acting, but so very well-behaved. I could get him to sleep by picking him up but I couldn’t figure out why he always rolled over on his back and then would go to sleep. The wife told me that every night her husband took the dog to bed with him and Jake cuddled up to have his belly rubbed while it went to sleep.
Regardless of how much I wanted to keep that dog and I too, (after reading some of your information) legally could have kept Jake, but I did the right thing and returned him to his rightful family. The family offered me $50 for my efforts which I turned down. They were senior citizens and I’m sure on a fixed income at their age. I didn’t need the money to pay for the printing, gasoline, cleaning him or getting his shots. I did my civic duty and it sure did my heart a lot of good to see the two reconnected.
Couldn’t you please, pretty please give Lucy back to the Blantons? Please?
Debbie
