So-called Assault Weapons Ban Will Not Protect Children

Letter's author calls for practical solutions to protect children

Dear Editor,

There are practical things we can do to protect school children. State, local and federal governments have created gun free zone that invite evil people to slaughter defenseless victims.  Fortunately in Pickens most of our school have reserve officers who are armed.

We have school that need an armed guard.  There are bills in the general assemble to create another class of permit system for school employees with extra training.  We also have a bill in the general assemble to allow those school officials with a Concealed Weapons to carry in schools.  These people are trained and available NOW. Present law requires that the carry be concealed.  That is secret.  It is important that the people assigned to guard our school work there, completely know the layout of the school and know the people who belong there.

What does not work is the so called assault weapons ban.  That was done before and did not work.  Politicians who seek such laws know it will not work.  They just want more power over our lives. Columbine was done with other firearms.  The last three instances were done by people who did not legally own the firearm. Magazines holding 10 or less rounds can be changed very quickly. Such laws punish millions of American who own these firearms and have committed no crime.  It should be apparent that prohibitions on alcohol, and other items have failed.
