Southern Wesleyan University to Offer Environmental Studies Degree

New program aims to prepare students for careers in environmental consulting, environmental services and environmental education and research.

A new major at Southern Wesleyan University offers unique insights into a topic that affects everyone – the environment.

The university’s board of trustees approved the bachelor of science in environmental studies degree in October. The goal of the new program is to prepare students for a variety of career opportunities in environmental consulting, environmental services, environmental education and research as well as to prepare them for graduate degree programs in a variety of related fields.

The Environmental Studies major focuses on ecology, natural history, environmental economics, environmental law, environmental policy and sustainability, but it also offers the unique approach of introducing a spiritual worldview regarding stewardship and ethics into environmental issues.

The Environmental Studies major is geared toward individuals who enjoy the outdoors and have a passion for learning more about the natural world and educating others about environmental issues and environmental stewardship.

According to Rocky Nation, professor of biology, students have already enrolled in the degree program as a specialized major.
