Veterans Affairs Officer Election is May 11

Filing opens March 25 for special advisory election.

Filing opens later this month those seeking to be the next Pickens County Veterans Affairs Officer.

The Veterans Affairs Officer oversees the county's Veterans Affairs Office. The position is part-time.

The election has been slated for Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Candidate filing begins March 25 and closes April 5.

Candidates wishing to run in this election may file with the Pickens County Registration and Elections Commission at their office inside the Pickens County Administration Facility located at 222 McDaniel Ave Suite B-9 in Pickens.

The office is open 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday. beginning on Monday, March 25 through Friday, April 5, 2013.

A filing fee of $218.92 is required, made payable to the Pickens County Treasurer.

This is a nonpartisan election and no party affiliation will be placed on the ballot.

If only one candidate files, no advisory election will be held and the filing fee will be refunded.

Candidates wishing to run must prove that they are a veteran, proof of honorable separation and proof that they are a Pickens County resident.

Examples of proof include DD-214 or discharge certificate, Veterans Administration ID card, American Legion membership card, Disabled Americans Veterans membership or identification card, Veterans of Foreign Wars membership or identification card, an official identification card showing that the person has retired from the military or any other document which shows honorable service or general discharge under honorable conditions.

Only those Pickens County veterans honorably discharged from the armed forces are eligible to vote in this advisory election. Veterans wishing to vote are not required to be registered, but must present proof of Pickens County residency.

Polling places will be Dacusville Middle School, Gettys Middle Scohol, R.C. Edwards Middle School, Liberty Elementary School and Pickens Elementary School.

Voters may go to any one of the above locations to cast their ballot, they are not assigned a particular polling place for this election.

The winner of the advisory election will be presented to the county legislative delegation for appointment. The delegation can also consider any other qualified person for the position.
