“I've got to train a new sheriff,” Smith replied.

“I hope it's not as hard as it was to get this one trained,” Stone said. “She's corrected me a lot of times. She's been what's kept the wheels turning.”

Stone said he was sure that at some point, everyone who works in the Sheriff's Office had come to Vickie for answers to questions.

“She's real knowledgeable of everything that goes on around there,” Stone said. “She's just been a gracious person. She never did meet a stranger. A lot of people come through the front door down there and come to the window. She's always pleasant.”

Stone presented Smith with a plaque that reads, “In sincere appreciation for your dedicated and loyal service to the Pickens County Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Pickens County, Sept. 24, 1984 – December 31, 2012.”

“It has been a pleasure to work with you,” Stone said.

Assistant Sheriff Tim Morgan said Smith came to work for the Sheriff's Office on his birthday 28 years ago.

“You're kind of my birthday present,” Morgan told her. “You are absolutely the most efficient person I know. Thank you so much for what you've meant for me and for what you've done.”

Smith said she loved all of her coworkers.

“I appreciate all of you,” she said. “God just bless all of you going forward, keep you safe. I wish all of you the best.”
