By Matthew Truesdale
Wren High School’s Jamie Hintson and Kate Brady each won events at this weekend’s South Carolina District Tournament at Southside High School, earning spots in the National Forensics League’s National Speech and Debate Tournament this June in Birmingham, Alabama.
This is Jamie’s second consecutive trip to the national tournament in Lincoln-Douglas debate, as he earned a spot last year by finishing second at the district tournament. His first place finish at the district competition gives him five tournament wins this year.

Kate is making her first trip to the national tournament in the field of Original Oratory. Kate is a novice competitor, and the district tournament is just the fifth tournament in which she has competed, making her accomplishment that much more remarkable.
The Wren High School Speech and Debate team is in its third year of competition, but this is only the second year in which the students have had a class to help with preparation for events. Along with Jamie and Kate earning trips to the national tournament, the Wren team also picked up three state championships this year--Luke Jennings for Oratorical Interpretation, Kim Kirby for Novice Reading, and Jamie Hintson for Lincoln-Douglas debate.
