Berkeley Co. Cracks Down on DUIs

$99,000 grant funds reduction of driving-under-the-influence fatality.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $99,104.00 grant from the S.C. Department of Public Safety, Office of Highway Safety to help reduce DUI fatalities on roadways.

The grant will allow the Sheriff’s Office to add another deputy to the H.E.A.T. (HighwayEnforcement of Aggressive Traffic) Team that has been on the road for more than three years.

This 2013 grant award pays for the additional officer’s salary as well as equipment. Since the team was implemented in November 2009, the fatality rate has dropped 25 percent.
