Brandywine Boulevard Renamed Button Hall Avenue

Name change reflects city's history.

Brandywine Boulevard has been renamed to Button Hall Avenue to reflect the city's history, according to Goose CreekΒ Mayor Michael Heitzler, one of the city's leading historians.Β

The street number for each resident and property owner along Brandywine Boulevard will remain the same; the only modification will be in the street name. The change began this month.Β

"The reason for changing Brandywine Boulevard to Button Hall is that road traces the Button Hall Avenue from an earlier era and has a great deal of significance in the history of our community," Heitzler said. "(Brandywine)Β was a commercial name given to those townhouses when it was a gravel road ... Button Hall Avenue has a 300-year legacy to it."

Button Hall Avenue was a dirt road that came off St. James Avenue toward a family home near where the water tower sits today β€” long before N. Goose Creek Boulevard cut through the area.Β Heitzler said Brandywine Boulevard was named in the late 1970s.Β

Want to learn more about the significance of Button Hall Avenue? The mayor is planning a short booklet describing the importance of the road later this year. He's currently working on a booklet regarding Carnes Crossroads.Β
