District Continues to Push for Driver Awareness Near Schools
District reports that 'Drive Like Your Child Lives Here' campaign has curbed some dangerous driving behavior but improvements are still needed.

Berkeley County School District's initiative to increase driver awareness around schools to prevent dangerous wrecks has received mixed reviews, ABC News 4 reported.
The TV news station reported that while it has raised some awareness, improvements are still needed. The campaign "Drive Like Your Child Lives Here" was launched in February.Β

"It's really helped raise awareness with our parents that every child, regardless if it is your own, or another child getting out of the car behind you, or ahead of you, or those that are walking or biking to school -- really need to be watched out for on the way to and from school," Amy Kovach, Director of Communications for the Berkeley County School District said ... "We are still trying to push the message with our non-parents and non-school communities -- those drivers who don't have children in school at this time that drive past our schools. We are continuing to reach out to the community."
Within 15 days in 2012, a crossing guard was struck and hospitalized by a teen driver, and a wreck occured right outside Sangaree Elementary School. It raised alarms and the district leapt into action.Β
