Fewer Flu Cases in Goose Creek Than Neighbors

Berkeley County has fewest cases of season flu compared to neighbors; no fatalities here reported.

Maybe we're just washing our hands more in the Creek.

Berkeley County has the fewest cases of seasonal flu in the Lowcountry as the virus has swept across the state, killing 15 since Sept. 30.

In the last week of December, three positive cases were confirmed in the county, bringing the total to 13 cases. That's far fewer than the 115 cases reported by Charleston County, and the 27 cases reported by Dorchester County.

All of the Berkeley County cases are the deadly H3N2, which spawned the Hong Kong Flu of the 1960s, which killed 33,800 people in the United States. The seasonal flu claims about 36,000 lives each year in the nation.

Since Sept. 30, 862 hospitalizations due to flu have been reported in the state.

Patch reported in December that the state was considered "widespread" with flu.
