Gators Lose State Championship to Irmo 65-46

Goose Creek Gators unable to rally for a win.

The state championship game started in Goose Creek's favor: a three pointer to get the first points on the board.Β But a win was not in the cards for the Gators, as the team failed to get the ball through the hoop.

Once the team got behind in the first period, it stayed behind the No. 1, undefeated Irmo Yellow Jackets.Β 

Goose Creek was ranked No. 10, and finishes 22-5. The team came into the state championships at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia with little to lose after surprising many in the playoffs, but couldn't seem to convert the magic for the big game.Β

Gators went into the half 28-14, and first-year Head Coach Blake Hall chalked up the bad scoreboard to nerves.

"The kids need to relax a little bit," he told broadcasters.Β

The second half looked like much of the first, with the Gators trying many of their shots for three points and unable to sink the baskets.Β 

On the sidelines, cheering on the basketball team, the undefeated but disqualified Goose Creek Gator football team showed up in their football jerseys.Β
