Goose Creek Mayor Pays Up on Championship Bet

Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler is a man of his word, even if he doesn't accept defeat easily. The mayor grumbled a little before the above video was shot, and he even jabbed Irmo for its "funny name" — but it was all in good spirit. 

Heitzler entered into a wager with Irmo Mayor Hardy King on the state championship basketball game. The stakes were loser had to sing the other school's alma mater. 

Underdog Goose Creek fell to the undefeated Yellow Jackets 65-46.

Although Heitzler was uncertain on what tune went with the alma mater, he gave a stirring rendition in front of a few people gathered at Metro North Church in Goose Creek. 

Afterward, Heitzler said the Goose Creek Gators were still winners. 

"The Gators didn't lose that game. They played their hearts out," Heitzler said. "We sent a winning team to play Irmo. You don't win just by the score but how you play the game."
