Hanahan Woman Charged with Obstruction of Justice

Evette Monique Nelson allegedly attempted to lead suspicion away from man involved in car chase earlier this week.

The woman who claimed a man assaulted her, stole her vehicle and fled, leading police on a car chase, has been arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and two counts of unlawful conduct towards a child, according to a Hanahan Police statement.

Evette Monique Nelson, 25, of Hanahan was allegedly the victim of domestic violence Monday.Β Barry Jerod Stanley, in this week's car chase, is still at large.

Neslon identified Stanley, 29, as the subject who assaulted her, took her car, and lead Hanahan Police on a chase. Warrants were obtained based on her statements and the media was advised.

On Tuesday, Nelson came to the Hanahan Police station and told investigators that she lied about the identity of her attacker. She told police Stanley was an old boyfriend and that she wanted him to get in trouble. She provided the name of Deangelo Watson and provided other information in a signed, sworn statement.

However, Watson was interviewed by investigators who, in conjunction with inconsistencies in the statement of Nelson and forensic evidence obtained from the vehicle, determined that he was in no way connected to the assault, the chase or narcotics, according to police.

Police say thatΒ Nelson knowingly intended to lead suspicion away from Stanley and the investigation turned toward the relationship between Nelson and Stanley. A search warrant resulted in the detection of cocaine base in the microwave of the home Nelson shares with her two young children. Nelson is currently in the Berkeley County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Stanley is wanted by the Hanahan Police Department at this time on the charges of criminal domestic violence, trafficking in cocaine base, aggravated assault, failure to stop for blue lights and siren and two counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.Β
