Interstate Collision Results in Fuel Spill

Driver of tractor trailer transported to MUSC, and charged with driving too fast for conditions.

A two-vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer carrying gasoline resulted in a fuel spill and eastbound lanes of I-26 being shut down for nearly 12 hours Saturday.Β 

The collision occured near milemarker 191, according to S.C. Highway Patrol. The interstate was closed at exit 187, and traffic was rerouted to 78. The wreck happened at around 3 a.m., and the lanes were reopened before 3 p.m. Saturday.Β 

The tractor trailer was carrying nearly 9,000 gallons of gasoline but authorities were unsure how much of that had spilled, according to Count on 2. S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified of the spill.Β

Count on 2 reported tractor trailer driverΒ William Wieters, 27, was transported to MUSC in serious condition and was charged with driving too fast for road conditions by S.C. Highway Patrol.
