Mayor Declares April 'Sarcoidosis Awareness Month'

Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler makes declaration to increase public awareness.

Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler has declared April β€œSarcoidosis Awareness Month” in an effort to increase public awareness of the need to support individuals withΒ sarcoidosis, to raise awareness of the need for research funding and to educate medical professionals.

SarcoidosisΒ is an inflammatory disease that can affect almost any organ in the body and causes heightened immunity.Β  A person’s immune system normally protects the body from infection and disease, but withΒ sarcoidosisΒ the immune system overreacts, resulting in damage to the body’s own tissues.Β  It is a disease that affects many of our fellow citizens in chronic and debilitating ways and is a potentially fatal inflammatory disease that can appear in almost any organ in the body and can strike people of all races and all ages.

The Low-CountryΒ SarcoidosisΒ Support Group’s mission is to raise the awareness ofΒ sarcoidosisΒ and its health issues through educational campaigns for all.Β  The group is designed to strengthen patient/physician relationships, provide support through group meetings, online and via telephone and empower sufferers to become self advocates.
