24 percent of voters showed up for the 2010 GOP primary; will you show up for Tuesday's special primary?

On Tuesday, the GOP congressional field will likely be narrowed to two headed for a runoff, and two Democrats will vie for their party's nomination.Β
Special elections and primaries typically have lower turnouts than general elections. In the 2010 S.C. primaries, 24.11 percent of voters turned out. Less than 20 percent of voters in Beaufort County turned out to vote.Β

In the 2010 GOP primary, Tim Scott, who held the seat until he resigned to take an appointment to U.S. Senate, won a spot in the runoff with little more than 25,000 votes. Paul Thurmond made it into the runoff with Scott with more than 13,000 votes. The third place winner was Carroll Campbell who lost to Thurmond by about 1,000 votes to miss a place in the runoff.Β
Less than 70,000 people voted in the ensuing runoff election between Thurmond and Scott in 2010. Thurmond lost by roughly 25,000 votes.Β
