During President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech, he said he wants to raise the minimum wage. On Thursday, 14 of the 16 GOP candidates vying to become the party's nominee for the First Congressional District said they would vote to eliminate the minimum wage.Β

The federal rate is $7.25 per hour and some have argued that's not enough to help folks get out of poverty. The New York Times reported in 2012 that a S.C. resident, earning minimum wage, would need to work 74 hours per week to afford rent in the state.Β
