Speak Out: Too Many GOP Candidates in Congressional Race
Republican count is at 16 candidates β is this a good or bad thing for democracy?

The South Carolina First Congressional District race has heated up and attracted attention. The empty shoe left by now-Sen. Tim Scott has many feet vying to fill it, mostly from fellow Republicans.
The deadline to file for the special election was noon Monday, and 16 candidates were confirmed for the GOP primary. Two candidates are confirmed for the Democrat primary. Click here to see who is running.Β
In 2010, nine Republicans duked it out in a primary battle, which lead to a runoff between Scott and Paul Thurmond. Scott took more than 30 percent of the vote in the primary, and won the runoff. He went on to win the general.Β
