Annexed Property Could Spur Mauldin's Growth

Former Fatz Cafe will become Tavern 24.

On Monday evening during a special session, the Mauldin City Council unanimously passed a measure to annex the property at 1145 Woodruff Road.

The property was previously home to Fatz Cafe and will be occupied by a new restaurant, called Tavern 24, that is also owned by Fatz's parent company. Tavern 24 will offer a casual dining atmosphere with music.

The location was previously in Greenville County and the restaurant's owners were enticed into Mauldin by the ability to sell alcohol on Sunday, according to city officials. The restaurant hopes to open by the end of this month.

The City could make the annexation official at the regularly scheduled meeting on June 18.

While the annexation of the property at 1145 Woodruff Road is sure to be a boon to the city's tax base, its greater significance may be in what it means for the city's future growth.

On Monday night, the city also unanimously approved the annexation of two ten-foot strips that will connect 1145 Woodruff Road to other properties in the city. The move paves the way for further annexations east on Woodruff Road, which include sites such as Sam's Club.

"We're very excited to bring this location into Mauldin," Mayor Dennis Raines. "It's a big step forward in our economic development."
