Former Lottery Employee Charged with Embezzlement

A 54-year-old former SC Education Lottery employee could face up to 10 years in prison.

Anthony J. McNeil, a former S.C. Education Lottery employee, was arrested Tuesday and charged with embezzling, a SLED press release stated.

McNeil allegedly transferred more than $226,000 into a private account he controlled.

While he was supposed to be collecting funds from lottery ticket retailers, McNeil used his position in the finance section to take funds instead of collecting money, according to the the affidavit.

Between April 2012 and August 2012, McNeil allegedly overcharged some retailers and failed to charge others. The overcharged retailers covered the amount owed to the lottery. Then, McNeil would contact the retailers who had not been charged, tell them they needed to pay, and transfer those funds into a private account.

The arrest warrant stated that the amount was more than $5,000, but if it's found that he embezzled more than $10,000, he would face 10 years imprisonment.
