Gowdy Votes Against Ending Sequestration

But bill passed on party-line vote will continue funding the government.

The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to continue funding the government through March 27, but voted against ending sequestration.

The votes to end the sequester were strictly along party lines. 228 Republicans--including Upstate Rep. Trey Gowdy and four others from South Carolina--prevented the measure from passing. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-2) voted for the resolution.

Despite the vote, Gowdy's office said the Congressman voted twice before to replace the sequester with smarter cuts to reduce wasteful spending.

“Republicans had a chance...to vote against the damaging sequester, but they voted in favor of the indiscriminate cuts – siding with Big Oil and millionaires over the middle class,” said Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “No one should be surprised that Republicans are relentlessly pursuing the wrong priorities, but the everyday, hardworking Americans who are bearing the brunt of these cuts are furious.”

On Monday, the Savannah River Site announced that 2,000 workers would be fully or partially furloughed.
