From Mauldin High School:

Completing Registration for the 2012-2013 School Year
Current students will receive a Schedule Course Request Report during homeroom on Monday, April 16. This report is a list of courses that a student has requested for the 2012 – 2013 school year. The report is not a schedule.

1.  Students are to return the report signed by a parent to their 4th period teachers no later than April 20.

2.  Parents are asked to complete the bottom portion of the report and indicate the method of transportation that the student will use to arrive and depart school next year.

3.  All students are required to return a signed report so an accurate record of course requests may remain on file in case students have schedule problems at the beginning of the year. The parent signature is required to ensure that parents are aware of the courses requested.

4.  Once all reports are returned, a master schedule will be built. Students will receive schedules in homeroom on the first day of school. Homeroom locations will be publicized.

Parent Override Procedures - General Information

A.  On-time Parent Override Requests
The original publicized Parent Override deadline was March 15. If a student submitted a parent override prior to the deadline, the desired course was entered in the student’s schedule requests for the coming year. Those meeting the deadline will have first priority for their override request. Every effort will be made to honor the request but cannot be guaranteed.

B.  Late Parent Override Requests
All override requests have been date stamped. If an override was/is submitted after March 15, the desired course will be entered in the student’s schedule requests for the coming year. However, those submitting a late parent override will have last priority in scheduling. For example, when building the master schedule if there is a course where the number of requests exceeds the maximum number of seats available, those who submitted the latest override will be the first eliminated from the course (from this group underclassmen will be removed first). As stated on the parent override form, “the student and parent understand that this parent override request will be honored only if space is available in the course requested.” If a student is removed from the course, the student will automatically be placed on a waiting list.

C.  Parent Overrides Received after April 20
Students will receive a Course Request Letter that will show all courses that we will attempt to schedule for students. Students will have an opportunity to make elective course changes and will be able to submit a late parent override. Request Letters are due by April 20. The procedures for handling the late parent overrides will be the same as those outlined in Part B above. However, if an override is submitted after April 20, the request will not be entered into the computer for the student as a request at this time for consideration in scheduling. After the master schedule has been built each override submitted after April 20 will be reviewed. If there is space in the class and state law limitations for a teacher’s maximum caseload is not exceeded, the override will be honored. Due to master scheduling building constraints and teacher allocation limits, please note that override requests submitted after April 20 have a small likelihood of being granted.

Parent Override Procedures
Parents and students are highly cautioned in the use of override forms. It has been the vast experience at Mauldin High School that students who are enrolled in courses with an override, have difficulty passing. Teachers cannot be expected to provide additional assistance beyond what is available to all students in the class. If a parent overrides a teacher recommendation and the student begins to experience difficulty in the class once scheduled, the student will not be removed to the original teacher recommended level.

Procedures for Completing Parent Override Forms:
The parent must come in to guidance to pick-up and sign the parent override form. No override form will be given directly to the student.  The guidance office is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily.
Guidance personnel who give the override form to the parent will:
        - Remind the parent that students will not be moved to a lower level if they begin to do poorly in the parent requested course
        - Witness the parent signature and initial beside the parent signature.

The parent must contact the teacher (email, phone, or face to face conference). This contact is required according to school district guidelines. This gives the teacher an opportunity to communicate the reasoning for the placement. The parent may politely disagree and the parent may continue the override process.

After the parent comes in and signs the form, the parent gets the form to the teacher via the student. The teacher must sign the form indicating that a conversation regarding placement recommendations has occurred. Teachers will not sign the override form unless a conversation with the parent has taken place. Once the teacher signs the form, the student is responsible for returning the form to guidance. The teachers’ signature is only an indication that they have spoken with the parent regarding their rationale for the placement. The signature is not an indication that the teacher agrees with the parents’ requests for another course.

Guidance will not accept a parent override form without a parent signature initialed by guidance personnel, or without a teacher signature.
