Mavs Win Jamboree Matchup Against Chapman, 34-21

Offense in mid-season form at Patriot Jamboree

After being canceled out of Friday night’s Jamboree due to lightning, Mauldin High finally got a chance to take the field in the first game of the Patriot Jamboree Saturday at J.L. Mann Academy.

The skies were clearer this time around, but the lightning returned in the form of the high-powered Mavericks offense. Helmed by sophomore Dre Massey, Mauldin outscored Chapman 34-21.

Junior running back Roy Nash scored two touchdowns, one on a one-yard plunge, the other on pass and catch that saw him break several tackles en route to the end zone. Senior Jordan Hallums made a spectacular touchdown catch on a throw from Massey (see photo). Massey himself got the Mavericks on the scoreboard with a darting touchdown run on the opening drive.

“We executed very well,” Mauldin Coach Doug Shaw said.” We had a couple of holding penalties, but otherwise I was happy. We have to get better defensively.”

Although, the Mavericks defense did pick up a touchdown when Tyler Reimer returned a fumble for a score, they struggled for much of the game.

“We have some guys who were out with injury, but that’s not an excuse,” Shaw said. “We got stood up a little bit. We’ll look at the film and come back on Monday and work on it.”

Shaw recognized junior Bryant Briggs and senior Xavier Smith out of the secondary for their performances, but is looking for improvement from the rest of the defensive unit.

Though several Mavericks excelled, Massey stood out. He showed plenty of poise and decision-making beyond his years, allowing his more experienced receivers to work against coverage.

“We’ve been running the offense for six years so it’s pretty well-established,” Shaw said. “Dre was patient and when he did make a mistake he knew what he did wrong. That’s pretty good for a sophomore.”

Shaw also praised kicker Evan Rogers who blasted kickoffs into the end zone forcing Chapman to start deep in their own territory.

Mauldin scrimmages Belton-Honea Path on Tuesday and then plays in the Mauldin Jamboree next week.

NOTE: Mauldin’s Athletic Director Steve Frady said confirmed that next week's Jamboree has been moved to Hillcrest while Mauldin’s field gets repaired.
