New Gun Store Set to Open This Summer
Palmetto State Armory, specialists in tactical and assault weapons currently in the spotlight after Newtown shootings, plans Woodruff Road location.

While a debate rages on gun control, especially on assault weapons used in recent mass shootings, a store that specializes in such high-powered, high capacity guns plans to open locally this summer.
Palmetto State Armory, which specializes in such weapons as the AR-15 assault rifle, will open sometime this July at 1040 Woodruff Road, the Greenville News reported.
The store, which has locations in Columbia and Beaufort, is well-known for tactical equipment but also carries a full line of hunting equipment including shotguns and bolt-action rifles, Jamin McCallum, Palmetto State Armory’s CEO and part-owner, told the paper.
In addition to gun sales, the store also will feature an 18-lane shooting range on site, the report said.
McCallum said in-store sales are split pretty evenly between hunters and tactical-weapon enthusiasts. In addition to brand-name weaponry, the store also sells an AR-15 model it manufactures out of its Columbia facility.
“A lot of people really strongly support the second amendment like we do,” McCallum told the paper. “So right now sales are very strong and people are really enjoying the sport.”
He added that sales at the company's stores are at record levels since the recent presidential election, which mirrors a rise in gun sales nationally since the re-election of President Obama and recent mass shootings in places such as Newtown, Conn., have raised fears of new gun control measures.
