Police: Repossession Leads to Tense Confrontation

Mauldin man charged with alleged assault when company tries to repossess his minivan.

A Mauldin man faces a third-degree assault and battery charge after he allegedly confronted a tow truck driver with a brick when his minivan was being repossessed, a Mauldin Police incident report said.

Police said they were called to a home on Woodland Drive about a disturbance to find the minivan's owner, 72-year-old James Fletcher, arguing with a tow truck driver and his partner, the report said.

The tow truck driver told police they were there to repossess Fletcher's Chrysler Town and Country minivan, the report said. When the driver was trying to get back in his truck and leave, he alleged that Fletcher confronted him and shoved him against his truck, the report said.

The driver said that when he was able to get inside his truck, Fletcher allegedly picked up a brick off the ground and threatened to smash the tow truck's windshield before finally relenting and throwing the brick back on the ground, the report said.

Flecther, who denied the tow truck driver's assault allegations, was issued a summons for the alleged assault. However, he caught a break from police who ordered the tow truck driver to release the vehicle. Though the tow truck driver said the minivan owner was in arrears on a loan, he was unable to provide any documentation for the repossession at the scene and also was issued a summons to appear in court on the matter, the report said.
