Bowman Closing Two Nights This Week

Charleston County Government announces temporary, nighttime work as part of the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project in Mount Pleasant. The purpose of the road work is to allow crews to paint the beams that support the Bowman Road overpass. Drivers choosing to use Bowman Road and Johnnie Dodds Boulevard on the evenings of May 2-6 are encouraged to drive with extra caution. If the weather is poor May 2-6, the work will continue on the next weather-permitting night.

• There will be a lane shift on Bowman Road at the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard intersection as follows:
  • Dates and times:
    • Wednesday, May 2 from 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
    • Saturday, May 5 from 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.
  • One lane in each direction on Bowman Road will be open at all times.

• There will be a road closure with a detour on Bowman Road at the Johnnie Dodds Boulevard intersection as follows:
  • Dates and times:
    • Thursday, May 3 from 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.   
    • Friday, May 4 from 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.
    • Sunday, May 6 from 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
  • Drivers on Bowman Road will not be able to cross Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and will be detoured around this intersection. Drivers on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard will not be affected by the detour.
  • Barricades and signs will be used to direct drivers through the detour.

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times. Alternative routes are recommended if possible. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

The goal of the project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013, is to improve the traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant, especially before and after school and work hours. The project is funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax and managed by Charleston County Government’s RoadWise Program, in close coordination with the Town of Mount Pleasant and the S.C. Department of Transportation.
