Coastal Flooding Monday Night

Big moon may cause flooding in low-lying areas.

The big moon that's got so many folks craning for the sky may cause significant flooding tonight, according to the National Weather Service Charleston.

A coastal flood warning is in place until 2 a.m. Tuesday.

High winds and larger-than-normal tides will combine between 8:30 p.m. tonight and 2 a.m. Tuesday to create conditions for significant coastal flooding, the Weather Service predicts. High tide is at 10 p.m. tonight.

The cause is the waning full moon, which has a greater magnetic pull on ocean levels when it's at its closest point to Earth.

Beaches, property near tidal creeks and low-elevation roads and driveways may become flooded, the Weather Service predicts. Floating docks may become inundated and some roads on the Peninsula will flood.
