Deadly Weekend on S.C. Roads

Nine weekend deaths bring total to 500 for 2012.

Nine people died South Carolina roads over the weekend. Though the number seems abnormally high for a non-holiday weekend, the death toll across the state is trending below last year's body count.

So far, 500 people have died on Palmetto State roads in 2012, according to Department of Public Safety records. This time in 2011, 525 had died on South Carolina roads.

Only Greenville County outranks Charleston for roadway fatalities in 2012 with 35 deaths so far this year.

The nine deaths from Aug. 17 to 19 included four motorcyclists and five vehicle occupants. One was not wearing a seatbelt.
