Meeting Tonight on Coleman Overhaul

Project advancing, but citizens still have input.

The town is planning a meeting this evening on the big overhaul planned for Coleman Boulevard. Mount Pleasant already has its preliminary plans before South Carolina DOT, but it is seeking public input on the project, since many details remain in flux.

If you aren't familiar with the project, here's what the $7.6 million overhaul will include:

  • Parkway: Replaces most of Coleman’s center turn lane with a parkway that’s planted with vegetation. It will look similar to the parkway in place near Patriots Point Boulevard.
  • Bike lane: A five-foot bike lane will connect the Ravenel Bridge to Sullivan’s Island. When complete, it will add a link straight from Charleston’s Battery to the beach.
  • Lighting: The town will add lampposts like what’s in place near Moultrie Middle School.
  • Power lines: Some of Coleman’s power lines will go underground to improve aesthetics.
  • Roundabout: A huge, multi-lane roundabout will ease congestion -- if it works properly – at the intersection of Coleman, Chuck Dawley and Ben Sawyer boulevards.

Meeting:
Monday April 30, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Moultrie Middle School Cafeteria located at 654 Coleman Boulevard, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina 29464.

Purpose:
The first public information meeting held on February 28th generated comments and questions from citizens that can best be addressed in a public meeting between the citizens, Town staff and design team. The meeting will have a drop-in format, with displays for viewing and citizens will have an opportunity to provide written comments. A brief presentation will be given at 5:15 to review the project history and design considerations.

The improvements are proposed to support the Coleman and Ben Sawyer Boulevards Revitalization Master Plan. Improvements include a four lane boulevard with a raised, landscaped median, dedicated bicycle lanes, limited on-street parallel parking, sidewalks, and a multi-lane roundabout at the intersection of Coleman Boulevard and Chuck Dawley Boulevard. Engineering personnel from the Town of Mount Pleasant will be available to answer questions.
