Poll: An iPad for Every Student?

School system eyes expansion of successful iPad pilot project.

Education leaders have for some time said iPads are the wave of the future for classrooms, and now Charleston Schools is reportedly considering giving one of the high-tech gadgets to every student in the system, according to media reports.

The Apple tablet PCs, which incorporate Internet, email and electronic books into one device, cost just shy of $700 a piece. Charleston County will issue 2,000 of the devices to students next year, adding to roughly 4,000 already in service, according to the Post and Courier, and the program could expand. There are roughly 45,000 students in county public schools.

Already students use the devices in a variety of clasroom applications, and many believe tablet PCs will replace traditional school books, which can cost $100 per edition and can go obsolete well before districts replace them.
