Report: Woman Struck by Lightning

Weekend storms injure woman, cause house fire.

Details are scarce regarding a Saturday lightning strike that reportedly sent one Mount Pleasant woman to the hospital with injuries.

It happened Saturday around 7 p.m. just as a severe thunderstorm swept the area, according to a dispatch by the National Weather Service.

Local forecasters reported several hundred lightning strikes in short period of time Saturday and Sunday evenings.

"Law enforcement reported a woman struck by lightning in Mount Pleasant. The woman was transported to a hospital. Extent of injuries unknown," reads the dispatch sent out by the Weather Service and re-posted on a number of weather sites.

A house fire was also reported on Pine Island View just 20 minutes after the lightning strike.

Heavy storms, including winds with gusts up to 70 mph, have dominated the early evening hours over the last few days, and forecasters expect the conditions to continue this evening.
