Reports: Workers Find Human Skull

Excavation crew finds remnants of an unmarked grave.

A backhoe operator excavating for utility system upgrades made an eye-popping discovery last week when he apparently uncovered a skull and eight other human bones.

The remains were discovered Aug. 14 at McCants Drive and Simmons Street in Mount Pleasant's Old Village, according to a police report. The contractor was digging roughly six feet below ground next to a cemetery when he unearthed a skull and three other bones. The remains were likely from an unmarked grave.

Work stopped immediately, a police incident report states, and police were called. Officers allowed the crew to continue to digging for water system upgrades. They eventually found five additional bones.
