Ryland Breaks Ground on New Homes

Homes are part of first large-scale, post-recession development in Mount Pleasant.

Ryland Homes recently started new home sales, and construction of a new model home at Tupelo, located on Hwy. 17 North near Wando High School in Mount Pleasant.

The project is the first large-scale, post-recesssion residential development East of the Cooper. It comes at a time when homes under $400,000 are at a extremely low level in Mount Pleasant, Realtors say.

Don McDonough, division president of Ryland Homes in the Charleston region, said Ryland plans to build 60 new three, four and five bedroom homes in the first phase at Tupelo priced from the $200s.

Eventually, Ryland Homes plans to build up to 300 new homes at Tupelo, which abutts Carolina Park, another residential development that will restart after going quiet following the 2008 economic meltdown.

Ryland Homes also has plans underway for an amenity center with a swimming pool. Ryland currently builds single family homes in seven communities throughout the Charleston-Myrtle Beach region. Its Charleston operations are headquartered on Daniel Island.
