A Mount Pleasant couple charged in 2010 for starving their 9-month-old child to death will be sentenced in court this afternoon.
Charles and Ashley Gordon are set for a 2:30 p.m. sentencing before Circuit Court Judge J.C. "Buddy" Nicholson, according to a media advisory from Solicitor Scarlett Wilson's office. The couple is charged with homicide by child abuse.
Speaking through their attorney at the time of their arrest, the Gordons said their infant had some sort of intestinal issue that prevented it from digesting food properly, according to media reports. They had two older boys who were apparently healthy.
The child's crib was soiled and scattered with bottles, the Post and Courier reported. He was down to 6 pounds 9 ounces from his birth weight of 8 pounds 4 ounces. The parents had never taken him to a doctor, police said. "The details of this investigation are horrific," said Police Chief Harry Sewell at the time.
The judge could sentence the pair to a term between 10 years and life in prison, according to state sentencing guidelines.
