Storms Bring Incredible Rain Totals

Spinoff from Isaac dumps large amounts of rain in Mount Pleasant.

The same storm that flooded parts of downtown Charleston and closed streets and caused accidents across the Lowcountry dumped an incredible amount of rain east of the Cooper.

Unofficial tallies put the total near 8 inches for Tuesday and Wednesday, and there's more wet stuff coming today, forecasters say.

Though rain gauges are located in various locations, so totals vary, National Weather Service spotters reported Tuesday's total between 3.25 and 4.01 inches in Mount Pleasant.

Official totals weren't available for Wednesday, but on average, guages recorded just shy of 4 inches of rain, according to the Weather Service. As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport recorded 3.63 inches of rain and that was just when the storm was starting. Official figures due out later today could show even more rain.

Thursday's forecast shows chances for yet even more rain, according to WCBD-TV weather guy Josh Marthers.

"Tropical moisture will remain in place today allowing for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms," Marthers wrote in his morning report. "Rainfall could be extremely heavy at times and isolated flash flooding cannot be ruled out. Highs will be in the middle 80s."

Tuesday and Wednesday's rain came via an offshoot of Hurricane Isaac that broke off earlier in the week. Of course, the rainfall totals here are nothing compared to what's been seen along the Gulf Coast, which had d direct impact with the storm.

Some estimates suggest the storm has dropped near 20 inches of rain in Louisiana, and the storm is making a slow creep up the Mississippi River.
