Debby, Please Don't be a Downer

Forecasters today are closely watching a storm system brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. The disorganized mass of storms could be upgraded to a tropical storm within two days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

If wind speeds top 39 mph, it would be Tropical Storm Debby, the fourth named system of the 2012 season, and it could provide soaking rains and flooding to Mexico, Cuba and Florida, depending on its path of travel.

"Environmental conditions appear to be conducive for a tropical depression to form during the next day or two as this system begins to move slowly northward," a National Hurricane Center forecaster wrote.

Short-lived Hurricane Chris is now a tropical storm and is churning off the coast of Canada. It still poses no threat of landfall.

Forecasters may send an aircraft into Debbie today. It is currently a disorganized mass of storms brewing between south Florida, the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba.
