Update: Ernesto, Florence Losing Steam

Storm with concerning path seems to be losing steam.

The Atlantic's sixth tropical storm of 2012 appears to be another dud. Thankfully.

Tropical Storm Florence lost a lot of steam overnight Saturday and may be headed to a significant downgrade after forecasters thought it might be upgraded to a hurricane today.

"Visible images suggest that southeasterly shear has taken a toll on the structure of Florence," the National Hurricane Center reported. "The center appears to be on the edge of a weakening area of convection with some degradation noted in microwave images."

The official forecast for Florence has been downgraded significantly from Saturday, though it is still on a northwest path.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Honduras are bracing for impact with Tropical Storm Ernesto, but Sunday forecasts suggest the storm is weakening.

The storm should make landfall in Central America by Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center. After it passes its initial brush with land, Ernesto could impact Belize and the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.
