Woman Dies After Jumping From Bridge

Witnesses rush to assist woman who jumped from Ravenel Bridge.

UPDATE: The woman who jumped from the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge died late Sunday from injuries sustained from the fall, according to the Post and Courier. She is identified as Belinda Roper.

A crowd of witnesses rushed to assist a woman who apparently jumped from the Ravenel Bridge Sunday afternoon.

Police said the 57-year-old woman was OK, but may have been in shock, according to the Post and Courier. Two motorists on the bridge exited their vehicles to save the woman before she jumped.

One man on the pier in Mount Pleasant shed his clothes and entered the water to assist her, the newspaper reports. Boaters eventually rescued the woman before authorities arrived.

The 7-year-old Ravenel Bridge is a 150-foot-drop from the Cooper River below. The bridge has been the scene of two suicides in recent months.
