Hillcrest Girls Softball Advances in District Playoffs; Eliminates Mauldin

Girls will play for District III championship tonight at Clover.

With a thrilling three-run walk-off homer Tuesday by Sarah Stewart, the Hillcrest Girls softball team beat arch-rival Mauldin 4-2 in the Class 4A District III playoffs.

With the win, Mauldin is eliminated from the playoffs, while Hillcrest now must take two games against Clover to clinch the district championship and advance to the Upper State playoffs.

With the score tied in the final inning, Kaitlyn Wagers gave the Lady Mavs a one-run lead with a solo homer in the top of the seventh before Stewart's blast won it for Hillcrest.

When Mauldin scored, my heart sank a little bit,” Hillcrest coach Kim Givens told Greenville News. “It was a do-or-die situation. Sarah was due. I’m speechless.”
