Obituary: James Goodson of Simpsonville

A private memorial service for the decorated Vietnam vet will be held at a later date.

James K. "Goody" Goodson of Simpsonville, SC, died on March 12, 2013. Born and raised in Miami, Goody had a fondness for fishing and the warm Florida sun.Β

A decorated Vietnam veteran, Goody returned from the Air Force and began his career as an aircraft mechanic with Eastern Airlines, raised a family, and many years later retired from Lockheed/Martin. Retirement brought with it everything he hoped: lots of time to putter in his vegetable garden, hunt with his buddies, enjoy his family, and read voraciously.Β

In addition to being an avid reader, Goody was a compulsive trivia buff. His family considered him the smartest man they knew and he proudly wore the moniker of "gold mine of useless information." He was so smart, in fact, that his brother never Googled, opting to "Goody" his questions instead.Β

Goody, a devoted husband and father, is survived by his wife Karen, his daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Keith, brothers Anthony and wife Rita, Barney and wife Marguerite, and Burt as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends whom he adored.Β

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tax-deductible donations be made to Greenville Tech Foundation in honor of James K. Goodson. Goody was a tremendous advocate of learning and encouraged everyone around him to "never stop learning." We are hopeful that your donation will help a student in need continue their education so they, too, can beat everyone in Jeopardy.

Donations should be sent to Greenville Tech Foundation, MS 6002, PO Box 5616, Greenville, SC 29606-5616. Please note Quick Jobs in honor of James K. Goodson in the memo field.Β
