Construction Begins on Bacons Bridge Road

Wednesday groundbreaking ceremony kicks off three-year, $23.9 million project aimed at relieving the beleaguered Summerville road.

Dorchester County Sales Tax Transportation Authority and Dorchester County Council broke ground Wednesday on Bacons Bridge Road construction, which will last until September 2015.

The project will cost $23.9 million. The funding is broken between four funds: $5,357,575 from the county's one-cent sales tax, $9,607,715 from Federal Match Program Grant, $1,500,000 from SCDOT Intersection Safety Funds, and $7,500,000 from CHATS Guideshare.

The project will also widen the road from two to five lanes from Dolphin Drive to Highway 61. There will be a 10-foot multi-use path on the east side of Ashley River Bridge to Jimbo Road, an 8-foot multi-use path from Jimbo Road to the end of project, and an 8-foot multi-use path on west side from Sawmill Branch parking area to end of project.

This project is part of the Dorchester County Sales Tax Transportation Authority’s program, which includes 22 road improvement projects. The program is funded by $125 million from the one-cent sales tax and the remainder provided by SCDOT, Federal Highway Administration, private contributors, and other sources.
