County Moves Forward with Showa Denko Incentives

Japanese company seeks to expand Ridgeville presence with $200 million investment. Company could bring 90 jobs.

Dorchester County Council approved second reading of payment-in-lieu-of-property tax agreement with Showa Denko Carbon Inc. of Ridgeville Monday.

The deal is to "induce the company to acquire, construct and equip additional facilities for production and distribution of high technology goods," according to the agreement.

The company will make a $200 million investment and create about 90, according to the agreement.

Third and final agreement will be made at the next meeting of council is May 21 at its Summerville chambers.

Showa Denko Carbon Inc. operates a graphite manufacturing plant near Ridgeville, as part of the Japanese chemical company Showa Denko KK. Showa Denko is a supplier of graphite products to the global steel and automotive industries.
