'Death Zone' Wreck Snarls Traffic
Westbound traffic on I-26 delayed; driver of wrecked 18-wheeler flown to MUSC.

A single-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning caused traffic delays for westbound traffic well into rush hour.Â
According to S.C. Highway Patrol, Samuel E. Grant, 55, of Sumter crashed his 18-wheeler truck near milemarker 170 on Interstate 26 — an area dubbed by local media as the "death zone." Grant was transported by air to MUSC.
The incident occured just after 3:45 a.m., but highway patrol did not re-open lanes until around 8 a.m.Â

The truck was a 2005 Freightliner, carrying a roll of steel.
According to highway patrol, Grant was traveling westbound on I-26, when near the milemarker 170 the vehicle ran off the interstate and struck several trees. Some of those trees landed in the interstate.Â

The collision is still under investigation.
