Flu Grips Summerville Going Into 2013

Dorchester County has more flu cases than Berkeley, Colleton and Orangeburg counties combined; no fatalities here reported.

Feeling downright cruddy? It could be the flu, which is tearing through the state and Dorchester County.

In the last week of December, eight positive cases were confirmed in the county, bringing the total to 27 cases. That is more cases than its three neighbors (Berkreley, Colleton and Orangeburg counties) combined, but far fewer than the 115 cases reported by Charleston County.

Most of the Dorchester County cases (26 of 27 reported) are the deadly H3N2, which spawned the Hong Kong Flu of the 1960s, which killed 33,800 people in the United States. The seasonal flu claims about 36,000 lives each year in the nation.
